European Capital of Culture to boost urban regeneration: the case of Ziemeļblāzma recreational area in Riga

 

Ziemeļblāzma (“Culture Palace”) is a good illustration of urban regeneration through culture. Built in 1913, located in a remote working-class area, Ziemeļblāzma now hosts cultural activities and presentations, but also constitutes a tourist attraction, a modern venue for learning the history of Latvia and Riga, a sophisticated art centre and a platform for generating innovative ideas.
